The Genius of Miuccia

Most of us would recognize the "Prada" emblem anywhere we saw it. A company that spans over 10 decades and found worldwide, the name carries a HEAVY weight. With it`s chic yet innovative designs, Prada has taken over the fashion world ten times over and is now a staple for any fashionista.

If asked about who designs Prada however, would you know the answer? Don't worry, I didn't either. The point to my opus is to introduce you all to my new favorite designer eyewear line, MiuMiu. "MiuMiu" is a contraction and nickname of Miuccia. Miuccia is non other then Miuccia Prada, granddaughter to the original Mr.Prada and current reigning designer of the Prada empire.

In 1992, Miuccia launched her passion project of high end fashions "MiuMiu". As part of this line, they introduced a collection of GORGEOUS frames and sunglasses. Whimsy, colorful, happy and expression are just some of the words that I can use to describe this incredible collection of what I truly feel are little works of art.

In the design process phase, Miuccia has said that she gives herself 3 tries for each idea. If, in 3 tries, she cannot get the idea to translate from her head to paper, then she scraps the whole thing! Now THAT is dedication to your craft my friends. These pieces are built with love and show it. SO many bright colours and designs as well as more classic pieces done with a twist characterize this amazing body of work. Miuccia wants the consumers to stop being so afraid of expressing themselves with their eyewear. Let these little babies help you make a statement and feel like it's a party all the time! Let me just share some of these stunners with you...

"Put Me in Coach! The Trends That are Taking Over"

Like basically every facet of the fashion universe, the optical world see's trends come and go. When it comes to what's "in", the changes are equally as rapid in the world of frames as it is in the world of clothes...or shoes...or handbags....or pretty much ANYTHING.

So, about five to ten years ago, we were seeing A LOT of small, rectangular styles.

Now, I'm not saying that this type of style has completely disappeared. As you well know, you can always find a certain type of style in anything if you really want it. However, the trend has definitely veered far off this track.

So, let's get to the main event. Here are the 3 trends that have touched down...and HARD.

1. Oversized

Whether it's square, round or cat-eye, the big look that is in right now is....well, BIG. The style has definitely stepped away from the smaller and delicate to the bigger and bolder. Top name designers like Chloe, Prada, Tom Ford etc. have lead the way in this movement with some AMAZING looks. Like these ones!

2. Cat-Eye

This sexy, retro 50's/60's era look has been sweeping the markets. We are HUGE fans of this feminine, bold, gorgeous style! Oh, and the great thing is that it comes in different degrees. From gentle up-sweep to full on Cat Woman, there is a look for every lady.

3. Retro

It's no secret that the retro, throw-back look is in. From denim jackets, to gauchos and corduroy, the past is totally present. In terms of optical, we did NOT escape this oh-so-popular trend!

So, I guess the moral of the story is that the world of fashion is ever changing......and the world of optical design is no exception!

"Volte Face: For When Ordinary Just Won't Do"

This month, I want to shine the light on Volte Face, a designer eyewear name that is, in my opinion, a taste of the future.
Established in 1997 and now part of the J.R Rey family, “volte face” means an about face or a switch from thinking one way to another.  This brand radiates the meaning. With its modern, cutting edge designs, Volte Face is changing the traditional eyewear design in every sense. In a world where everything is about speed and convenience, they have managed to lead the way without compromising quality.
In fact, Volte Face is doing just the opposite. High quality Italian acetates are used in the crafting of their beautiful frames. All hand made in France, they are triple tumbled in Bamboo to get their one of a kind high lustre finish.  Basically just AMAZING stuff.
The first thing you will notice when you view the collection is an insane burst of colour. Your eyes don’t know where to look first because of how unique each frame is. I would definitely say they are characterized by Avant-garde materials. Mixed with intricate detailing and architecture, these glasses sure do make the right statement.
And that folks, is the right recipe for the best in eyewear.

"Onward and Upward"

Fashion has evolved tenfold in the last decade. With fads coming in and out of style as fast as a horse at the Kentucky Derby, staying still is fashion suicide. The world of eyewear is no different. Lately I've been noticing more and more people coming in with the same opening line; "Show me what the most current styles are". Not necessarily the first thing traditionally said.

Traditionally, choosing your glasses was based largely on functionality and comfort. The selection of frames in dispensaries was definitely driven by a medical sense more than anything else. Now, oh the beautiful, colorful now. Now, coming in to an eyewear boutique such as ours is more a kin to a feast.
You have a smorgasbord of choices completely on trend with the latest and greatest fashions. From Tom Ford to Chloe to Dolce&Gabbana, all of the eyewear is nothing short of artwork.

I could go on forever, but, I will just leave you all with this tidbit: Your glasses sit on your face. The first thing anyone sees. Remember to wear them with pride!

"Chores and More"

As the great English writer Aaron Hill once said, "Don't call the world dirty because you forgot to clean your glasses".  Well, I say right on Mr.Hill.

Cleaning their glasses is a task that most people do on a regular basis. However, it seems that this area of cleanliness has been warped through the years. Though spritzing a little bit of Windex seems appealing, it is definitely not the right plan of action.

When tackling your fave pair of shades or reading glasses, a good rule of thumb is stick to the original. Most optometrists and dispensaries offer complimentary lens cleaner and cloths with your purchase. If they don't, you can pick them up at a number of places including most grocery store pharmacy departments.

Remember, ladies and gents, it's all about integrity right? Treat your lenses well and they will reward you with something great- a crystal clear view of your world.

That's all for now folks,

R.
